I’ve been trying to write something coherent about the first great record of 2014, James Vincent McMorrow’s Post Tropical, for the last week or so. The truth is, I don’t have anything deep or meaningful to say about the record… but I do know the following about it:
- It’s stunning and spectacularly pretty throughout. It sounds/feels/is fresh and vibrant from first note to last.
- It makes me feel feelings.
- Every single time through something new (a stray lyric, a particularly exquisite arrangement, etc) jumps out and stops me dead. Every. Single. Time.
- It’s an exceptional step forward in terms of songwriting for McMorrow, who was already a pretty phenomenal songwriter.
- It’s real, real good.
That’s what I’ve come up with. Basically I think this record is worth your money and time, which is about as high a compliment/praise as I can give. Enjoy.
