‘Gold’ / ‘Look Out’- James Vincent McMorrow

I’ve been trying to write something coherent about the first great record of 2014, James Vincent McMorrow’s Post Tropical, for the last week or so. The truth is, I don’t have anything deep or meaningful to say about the record… but I do know the following about it:

  1. It’s stunning and spectacularly pretty throughout. It sounds/feels/is fresh and vibrant from first note to last.
  2. It makes me feel feelings.
  3. Every single time through something new (a stray lyric, a particularly exquisite arrangement, etc) jumps out and stops me dead. Every. Single. Time.
  4. It’s an exceptional step forward in terms of songwriting for McMorrow, who was already a pretty phenomenal songwriter.
  5. It’s real, real good.

That’s what I’ve come up with. Basically I think this record is worth your money and time, which is about as high a compliment/praise as I can give. Enjoy.
