‘I Will Not Be Broken Nor Will I Be Denied’- JKutchma & The Five Fifths

Words by Agatha Donkar

In North Carolina, everyone has six bands: their primary project, their secondary project, their bassist’s secondary project, their drummer’s instrumental surf-noise band, their next door neighbor’s primary project, and the covers band they play in twice a year for benefits. Luckily for us, most of those bands are all really good — even the covers band.

JKutchma & The Five Fifths is the second project of Jason Kutchma, who spends a lot of his year fronting Durham, NC punk band Red Collar — the venue for the songs that don’t fit with Red Collar’s high energy destroy everything approach to rock and roll. His songwriting in both places is exquisite, but with the 5 Fifths, his songs wear their broken hearts on their sleeves instead of in their two guitar attack and fierce punk drumming.

“I Will Not Be Broken Nor Will I Be Denied” is not just one of my favorite songs of 2012, it’s one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s part protest song and part personal prayer, and I think it’s devastatingly lovely every time I hear it.
