I know this much about ‘Broken Minds’ by Northern Youth: it’s catchy, damn good and I like it a lot. I like its slow build (and steady introduction of elements) before bursting wide open about halfway through. I like that it uses handclaps, ‘oooh’s,’ ‘ohhhh’s,’ and ‘ahhhs’ to keep the song from feeling heavy despite lyrics that are full of self-doubt, regret and sadness. But most of all I like that it does all this without feeling labored or forced. ‘Broken Minds’ is just a really well-executed, beautifully troubled anthem.
